Preparing to Make Decisions

I can foresee a time in my near future where I am going to have to make a difficult decision. I want to choose what is right. So in my efforts to figure just what that is out, I’ve been studying up on the idea of good, better, and best, and how to tell the difference between them, and how to have the strength and courage to let that which is good go for a hope of what is best.

I have been reading the talks on the topic already and picking bits and pieces out of them. I have read, “Good, Better, Best” by Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “Choose Wisely” by Elder Quentin L. Cook, “Where Will This Lead” by Dallin H. Oaks, and “The Lord has a Plan for Us” by Carlos A. Godoy. The thing that stands out the most so far is the idea of distractions and the need to weed them out. I know from my own experience that I should pay attention to where and when I feel peace. I also know that I need to stay close to the Savior because he knows the way. But maybe I should consider working backwards and get it clear in my head what best would look like to me and take that thought to the Lord, seeking His approval of my desires and definition? If I had a clear definition and image in my head of best and knew the Lord agreed, wouldn’t that be so much easier to weed out what isn’t best?

So here’s what I have learned and know so far:

  • Good doesn’t mean I should do it.
  • Beware of distractions. Learn to recognize them.
  • Pay attention to where I feel peace.
  • Stay close to the Savior.
  • Assess whether or not the choice will help to fulfill my patriarchal blessing.
  • Pay attention to where I can feel The Spirit.
  • Begin with the end in mind.
  • Be willing to let it all go if necessary.

I feel like this is a solid start to contemplating the necessary things for sound decision making. I can’t express enough how grateful I am for the resources the Lord has provided us to guide and direct our paths.

Forever grateful and so super excited to move forward.
