I love reading about Alma and Amulek. There are so many lessons to be learned through this section of the scriptures. One of which simply edifies on the character of God.
God is patient. Amulek clearly owns his choice to stall God’s intent for him. He recognizes that he knew God had been wanting him to fill a greater role in the Kingdom, but Amulek didn’t want to be that just yet. “I was called many times and I would not hear, therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would not know.” (Alma 10:6) Just because Amulek refused to listen when God was urging him to become more doesn’t mean that God had turned His back on him and gave up on him. No, God doesn’t do this to us. He patiently waits. His love is all encompassing. That means he loves us through all of our choices, even when they are against what is best for us. He simply patiently waits for us to be ready to choose His will for us. He continued to offer the higher road to Amulek, to give opportunities to improve, patiently waiting (and being hopeful, I’m sure), not holding a grudge or being angry at him over his choices (those are not qualities of God) but instead patiently waiting in love, vision and perspective.
Self Reflection: How has God been patient with you? What are you being called to in your life but choosing not to hear?
God is continually at work in our lives. Even though Amulek chose not to do God’s will for himself originally, God continued to prepare Amulek for the day that he would finally be ready for all that he was being called to. Amulek lived in an educated, well established community that was more strong in the learned than the Spirit. He was one who was well known in his community. He had been successful and prosperous in his life. He was strong and powerful. All of these blessings prepared him to be the influential missionary that God was calling him to become. God didn’t sit back and idly wait for Amulek to be ready, but instead was molding his life in other ways to help prepare Amulek. He is always active in our lives.
Self Reflection: How has God been preparing you in your life? What is He preparing you for?
There are so many more things we learn about our Heavenly Father through Amulek. We learn He honors agency. He respects it. He wants the best for us and plans for us accordingly. He never gives up on us. It’s never too late in His eyes. He is forever hopeful for us. He prepares ways for all people. He uses us as His hands to help others. So many great things …
I feel so lucky to know all that I know. I KNOW that I am lucky to have the Gospel in my life. So many people don’t. God’s love is real!
Forever grateful!
