My dad’s birthday is Valentine’s Day. Here is an entry I wrote about him a while back.

My dad came to visit us this weekend. I love having him around. He is so easy to get along with and always in a happy disposition – content. We took the kids to lunch at McDonald’s. When they were finished eating, they hurried off to the play area and left me and my dad behind to clean up. Wrappers, cups, half-eaten burgers – none of which were his, my dad hauled to the trash. No complaints about cleaning up or my messy little kids. Then, on his way back to our table, he bends his 68 year old body down to reach under the table to pick up a squished french fry that one of my kids dropped. In this moment, my heart began to swell. He, with his little gestures, so easily reminds me of what it means to be a daughter of God, to serve and to love, the humility and meekness. He could have left it, claiming “ah, that’s what the employees get paid to do.” But his heart doesn’t operate this way. He does not see himself above any other. He put the french fry on the tray and bent to retrieve another. Again, I am reminded of how much I love that man! My time with him will never be enough.
