We discussed the different migrations of the Book of Mormon so if you were to read, you could understand about where the people were geographically located as you were reading.
What I took from it …
Lehi had a deep understanding and wisdom as to why they needed the written record. He could forsee the chaos of his people without one (like that of Mulek’s people) and so sent his sons to get the record. Two things from this … 1) Would I ever send my sons to do such a scary/life-threatening task? I think sometimes we cruise through that part of scripture so quickly that we aren’t able to sense any of the emotion of that time and event, but I can only imagine the fear that Nephi and his brothers felt while going and trying to get those plates. It isn’t until Nephi’s mom lashes out in anger and fear against Lehi that the emotion is really apparent.
2) What does a written record really do for us that it is so important? Ultimately, it is how we learn of God and get to know Him. We read the scriptures to know God. Without record, Lehi’s people would have not known who God really was. We must read. And we must teach our children to read and to know for themselves, that is another failing pattern in the Book of Mormon. It’s so, so important.
I love the Book of Mormon! And I love sharing it with my kids. (Love, Share, Invite … maybe that’s even within our own families?)
Forever grateful to get to continuously learn about my amazing Father in Heaven!
