That Which is of God is Light

Light is so important to me. Spiritual light as well as literal light. I love it’s warmth and safety. Oftentimes, when I come home for lunch, I battle with my cats for a space in the house where the light is streaming in from outside. I love to feel the warmth of it on my cheeks and in my hair; to bask in its promise.

D&C 50 has been one of my favorite scriptures for a long time. I reference it often, but usually I reference it for verses 40-41, today it is for verse 24:

“That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”

Our loving Heavenly Father speaks to us in so many different ways. He knows that life can be scary and confusing, and because He loves us, He provides guidance for us. Light is one of those guiding forces.

Guiding Forces

  1. Light. When we feel light, spiritual light, it fills our hearts to swelling within us. It pushes all darkness out, and for a time, we are complete in Christ’s light. Light and darkness cannot exist in the same space. Seek light; let it guide.
  2. Peace. Confusion abounds easily. There are so many voices you can listen to, but who is right? Which do you heed? Those were also Joseph Smith’s questions. In D&C 6 the Lord is speaking to Oliver Cowdery about some concerns he had. In verse 23 He tells him, “Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?” There isn’t a greater witness. It doesn’t have to be understood, it just has to be felt. Let peace guide.
  3. Remembering. The Book of Mormon is plastered with the concept of remembering. When we have experienced those moments of light and peace, we need to make sure we document them in a way we can recall them and remember. Turbulent times come and we forget what we already know. We must recall and remember. Sister Wendy Watson Nelson recently discussed, in a podcast with Sister Sheri Dew, how to maneuver transitions in life. She expressed the need to hold tight to the things we know. Make lists, journal write, document … basically remember.

Seek Him. Live in His light. Be His light. Feel His peace. And hang on to what you know.

Forever grateful for a loving God who illuminates the chosen path of our lives.
