“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)
I drove Sidney and Anja to Panaca the other night to go star gazing. We all have deeply missed those dark Nevada skies. The road wound us through the mountains of familiar curves, (it has been a long time since I have driven those all too well known roads) and dropped us onto the straights of the desert, my car knows nothing below 90 mph on those highways.
When we arrived at our predetermined spot, we crawled out of the suburban and just stood there, looking up, speechless, breathless. I had forgotten how many stars are actually up in the sky! It’s hard to really take it all in. We spent some time just chillin and chattin and laughin and watching the shooting stars go by, then drove home.
I love getting to have this time with my girls. President Hinckley spoke of making sure we have time to be still in our lives in his book, Way to Be!:
“The world is so noisy. There are voices everywhere trying to influence us. We all need time to think. We need to drown out the clamor and noise and simply be quiet. We need time to ponder and meditate, and to contemplate the deeper things of life… Find some time to drown out the noise of the world … think about the kind of man or woman you want to become.”
My head so easily becomes a mess with the cares of the world. I don’t know how people do it, going about life at a million miles an hour, never stopping to breathe or eat and just chill – I just can’t do it. I need a slower pace with peace and calm and connection with my Heavenly Father.
Those stars and the company of my daughters were a perfect evening of being still, remembering my God and feeling gratitude. I’m so lucky!
Forever grateful!
